Content rights & sources

Where whenera's images and texts come from — and what to do if you believe your rights are infringed.

Images

Cards use images from Wikimedia Commons, museums and archives, under public domain and Creative Commons licenses. Images load from the source sites and are not hosted by us.

The author and license are shown under each card; where the license requires a link, it points to the official license text.

What the licenses mean

  • Public domain / CC0 — free use without restrictions;
  • CC BY — free use with author attribution;
  • CC BY-SA — like CC BY, plus derivatives under the same license;
  • GFDL — free documentation license with attribution;
  • Attribution — a custom author license on Wikimedia Commons.

Event texts

Facts are short retellings of historical events, edited by the service team and community pack authors. Texts may contain inaccuracies — the service is not a textbook (see the Terms of Use).

User content

Community pack authors are responsible for the rights to the texts and image links they add — see the Terms of Use.

Takedown requests

If you believe material is used without permission, write to support@whenera.com or use the feedback form (the “copyright violation” type). Include the page link, a description of the material and proof of your rights — we will remove the material or fix the attribution within a reasonable time.
